COLUMBIA, S.C. - George Washington softball came up short Friday in its opener at the Carolina Classic, falling, 2-0, to Marshall.

Sierra Lange continued her strong freshman campaign in the pitching circle, but the Colonials couldn’t solve Marshall’s Abigail Tolbert. The Thundering Herd broke the scoreless stalemate with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and closed out the victory at Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field.

GW (9-4) had its best chance in the second when Jessica Linquist and Rochelle Draper produced back-to-back one-out singles before a strikeout and a ground out ended that threat.

Those turned out to be the only hits for the Colonials, who were shut out for the first time this season. Marta Fuentes also worked a pair of walks.

Lange dropped to 4-2, despite another quality outing. The newcomer from Texas gave up two runs on six hits with four strikeouts against two walks in her six innings against a Marshall squad that earned an at-large NCAA berth last spring. She lowered her ERA to 3.18 in seven appearances this season.

ON DECK: GW has a doubleheader on tap Saturday. The Colonials will face Liberty at 10 a.m. before facing host South Carolina, which is ranked No. 20 nationally, at 12:30 p.m. They’ll wrap the weekend with another game against the Flames on Sunday morning.
