COLUMBIA, S.C. - George Washington softball hung tough against No. 20 South Carolina on Saturday afternoon but fell, 2-0, to the hosts at the Carolina Classic.

The narrow loss followed a 7-3 setback against Liberty earlier in the day at Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field.

Jenna Cone finished the doubleheader with three hits, including a pair of doubles, for the Colonials, who sit at 9-6 on the season.

South Carolina 2, GW 0 Sierra Lange kept the Colonials in it with a masterful pitching performance, but the Gamecocks claimed the victory behind Dixie Raley’s complete game shutout.

Lange attacked the Southeastern Conference lineup, allowing just two runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts and no walks. The freshman from Texas lowered her ERA to 3.07 in 43 1/3 innings this season but fell to 4-3.

GW also managed five hits against Raley but couldn’t break through. Down 1-0, the Colonials put runners in scoring position in the first, fifth and sixth inning. Cone had two hits with Marta Fuentes, Criza Bulanadi and Morgan Rinehart adding the others.

South Carolina took the early lead when it turned a leadoff hit batter into a run in the first inning and added insurance on Kennedy Clark’s home run in the sixth.

Liberty 7, GW 3 The Colonials matched Liberty’s eight hits but couldn’t overcome the Flames’ four-run fourth inning in the opener.

The Colonials trailed 5-0 before plating two runs in the sixth inning. A single by Priscilla Martinez and doubles by Cone and Rochelle Draper put them on the board.

After Liberty scored two in the bottom of the inning to restore the cushion, GW scored its final run on an RBI double from Martinez with two outs in the seventh. Lange’s walk kept the rally alive before a strikeout ended it.

GW starter Sarah Costlow allowed five runs in 3 2/3 innings in her first loss of the season.

On Deck GW wraps up its stay in South Carolina on Sunday with a rematch against Liberty at 10 a.m.
