Softball Splits Doubleheader at UMBC
March 4, 2008
WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington softball team split its doubleheader at UMBC Tuesday afternoon at the UMBC Stadium. GW took the opener, 3-1 and fell in the nightcap, 5-0.
GW took the opener, 3-1 on the strength of a great pitching performance by Gabriel, and home runs by Gabriel and redshirt-sophomore Elisa Van Kirk. Down 1-0 in the fourth, freshman Katie Terrazas started the rally with a double down the left field line. She later advanced to third on a passed ball before Van Kirk's two-out, two-run blast, her third home run of the season.
Already up a run, Gabriel helped her own cause by extending the lead with her round-tripper of the season to lead off the fifth.
Gabriel (2-3) pitched her fourth complete game in five starts to pick up the win. The right-handed pitcher from Fullerton, CA allowed just four hits and one earned run in the seven innings, while striking out eight. At one point Gabriel retired ten straight Retrievers, from the third through the sixth inning, before allowing a pinch hit single to lead off the seventh.
The Colonials fell in the second game, 5-0, as Gabriel pitched five innings to start the nightcap. Junior Carrie Higdon pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning for GW. Gabriel (2-4) allowed nine hits and four earned runs and struck out three in game two.
The Colonials had its best opportunity to score in the top of the sixth as they loaded the bases with just one out. However, UMBC pitcher Amanda Fefel was able to escape the inning unscathed.
Halkiotis, Terrazas, senior Jackie Yaniga, Higdon, Van Kirk and Holst all recorded hits in the nightcap.
The Colonials (3-6) return home Sunday, March 9 for a 12:00 pm doubleheader against Bucknell. Live stats and play-by-play for the game against the Bison, and all home games can be viewed by clicking the GameTracker link on www.GWsports.com.
