March 5, 2011
WASHINGTON, DC-- The George Washington softball team picked up a pair of complete game victories from pitchers Kara Clauss and Heidi Penna against Army on Saturday at the Mount Vernon Field. GW won the first game 6-5, and took the second 6-2. The Colonials improved to 5-3 with the wins, while the Black Knights fell to 4-6.
In the first game, GW was up 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth on five hits, including two doubles, and five walks.
Army got back into the game in the top of the sixth, hitting in five runs to tie the game. GW starter Clauss (4-2) gave up a three-run homerun to Alexis AuBuchon, to move the score to 5-3, then walked in back-to-back runs to put the score at 5-all.
In the bottom of the seventh, senior Katie Terrazas led off the inning with a base hit up the middle. Lauren Wilson drew a walk to advance Terrazas to second, and moved up a base each when Clauss grounded out to the second baseman for the second out of the inning. On the first pitch thrown to Autumn Taylor, Terrazas scored on a wild pitch for the 6-5 GW victory.
In game two, the Colonials jumped on the board quickly in the first inning, getting three runs on two hits, two walks and an Army error. GW posted two more in the second as Chelsea Curcio singled in Lacey Cook from second. Curcio later scored on an Army error.
Game two starter Penna (1-1) tossed a no-hitter into the fifth inning. She gave up one run in the fifth and sixth. Penna didn't allow her only walk of the game until the seventh inning and struck out six Army batters.
The Colonials and the Black Knights match up on Sunday has been canceled due to rain. There is no make-up scheduled.
