WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team received solid pitching from senior Courtney Martin and sophomore Meghan Rico, but the Colonials dropped a tight one to district rival Howard, 2-1, in the Colonials Tournament opener on Friday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.

Martin (1-9) struck out five and allowed just one hit but was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs and walking four in three innings. Rico tossed four scoreless innings in relief, giving up four hits and striking out four without walking a batter.

In its season opener, Howard (1-0) scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. Following a leadoff walk in the third, Dominique Lawrence singled in the first run of the game with two outs. Then in the fourth, Jenny Ly tripled with two outs to make it 2-0.

After threatening in the fifth, the Colonials (1-14) pushed a run across in the bottom of the sixth to slice their deficit in half, as freshman Mary Wiley led off the inning with a double and scored on a double by classmate Jillian Galich to make it 2-1.

GW got a runner on second with no outs in the bottom of the seventh when freshman Marissa Mangini reached on an infield single and stole second, but she was stranded there and Howard held on for the 2-1 victory.

Alex Flynn (1-0) earned the complete game win for the Bison after allowing one run on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

The Colonials return to action on Saturday when they host Binghamton at 11:15 a.m. before a rematch with Howard at 1:30 p.m. on the second day of the Colonials Tournament at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
