War Eagle Classic Tournament Central

Box Score vs. Presbyterian | Box Score vs. Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. – Freshman Victoria Valos hit her first career home run and the Colonials added four insurance runs as the George Washington softball team defeated Presbyterian, 5-0, in the first game of the War Eagle Classic at Auburn’s Jane B. Moore Field on Friday afternoon. The Colonials fell to the host No. 20/19 Tigers, 3-0, in the nightcap.

GW’s win over Presbyterian (4-10) was its fourth in the last five games and is the second time in three contests that the Colonials (4-10) held their opponent scoreless.

Senior Kara Clauss pitched a complete game as she struck out nine batters and allowed just two hits. Clauss is now 3-6 on the mound after posting her second shutout of the season.

Valos got the Colonials on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with a homer to center field. Senior Lauren Wilson followed Valos in the fifth, knocking out her third home run of the season over the center field wall.

GW added three more runs off of four hits in the bottom of the sixth to secure the victory over the Blue Hose. Sophomore Chelsea Lenhart led off with a double to center field and Valos reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on a throwing error. Lenhart then rounded third and touched home on Presbyterian’s second straight throwing error.

The Colonials’ final two runs came off of junior Tara Fogarty's 2-RBI single up the middle to score classmate Julie Orlandi, who reached base on a fielding error, along with Valos.

In the second game of the afternoon, nationally-ranked Auburn used a two-run fourth inning to take the lead and added an extra run in the fifth to earn a 3-0 win over GW.

The Tigers, who are ranked 20th in this week’s National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top-25 and tied for 19th in the ESPN/USA Today Softball Top-25, used a balanced defensive effort to keep the Colonials from scoring. GW left six players stranded on base throughout the contest.

Sophomore hurler Courtney Martin (1-3), who pitched her second complete game of the season, suffered the loss after striking out four and allowing seven hits.

The Colonials return to War Eagle Classic action on Saturday, March 10 when the Buff and Blue face Louisiana Tech at 6:30 p.m. Fans can follow live stats at the tournament central page.
