Softball Splits Games on Day 2 of Winthrop Invitational

ROCK HILL, SC - George Washington softball went 1-1 on the second day of the Winthrop/adidas Invitational on Saturday at Terry Softball Complex. The Colonials defeated Providence College, 4-0, then fell to host Winthrop, 2-0, to move to 7-6 on the season.
Junior pitcher Kara Clauss battled from the circle against her younger sister Corinne for the first time in their softball career when the Colonials took on Providence.
GW took the lead in the first inning, getting a lead off single from Chelsea Lenhart, who later scored on a wild pitch.
The Colonials kept the 1-0 lead until the seventh. With two outs, Kristi Saporito got a pinch-hit single to right to extend the inning. Amanda Zakeri replaced Saporito on the bases and stole second as Lenhart came to the plate.
Lenhart battled at the plate to hit a RBI double down the right field line, pushing the Colonials lead to 2-0. Terrazas walked and Lauren Wilson loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch. Autumn Taylor battled at the plate to hit a two RBI single down the left field line, for the final, 4-0, score.
Kara allowed no runs on three hits, walked four and struck six for complete game victory.
In the second game of the day, both pitchers kept the opposing team off the board until the bottom of the third, when Winthrop went up 1-0.
The Eagles added an insurance run in the sixth inning, going to 2-0, off of three hits.
Clauss and Heidi Penna combined to toss six innings, allowing two runs on five hits, walking four and striking out three.
The Colonials return to Winthrop's Terry Complex for two more games on the final day of the Winthrop/adidas Invitational. GW will face Winthrop at 11:00 am on Terry Field, followed by facing Gardner-Webb at approximately 1:00 pm.
