Carrie Higdon and the Colonials Split Another Pair at Rebel Spring Games

March 14, 2007

Final Stats

KISSIMMEE, FL - Sophomore pitcher Carrie Higdon, helped her own case by slamming the game-winning home run to lead the George Washington Colonials (8-7) to a 6-5 victory over Rider, in GW's second game of the Rebel Spring Games today.

GW got off to a quick start when junior Chrysanthi Halkiotis led off the game with a single. Senior Elana Meyers sacrificed her over with a bunt to the left side. Halkiotis stole third and scored on a passed ball.

The Colonials scored two more in the second to take a 3-0 advantage. Senior Nikki Brooks led off with a single. Junior Lisa Cohen reached base after a catcher's interference was called. Freshman Amanda Holst was then walked to load the bases. Halkiotis later reached on an error which scored both Brooks and Cohen.

Rider cut the lead to 3-1 with a run in the top of third but GW responded with a run of their own. Junior shortstop, Caroline Howe, led off the inning with a double. The double was the 100th career hit of her career and she is just the second player in Colonials history to set that mark (Elana Meyers). Howe advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a RBI single by sophomore Tori Sensi.

The Broncs rallied for four runs off Higdon, who came in to replace junior Katie Miller, to take a 5-4 lead. The Colonials bounced back later in the inning to tie the game with an RBI double by Meyers which scored Holst from second.

Higdon's home run to left field in the bottom of the fifth was her first career home run.

The Colonials fell to Hartford, 2-0 in the earlier game but got a great pitching performance by freshman Amanda Gabriel. Gabriel pitched all seven innings and allowed just two runs while striking out 10.
