TAMPA, FL - The George Washington University (7-12) softball team fell to Boston University (14-6), 6-5, Sunday at the USF Under Armour Showcase. The Colonials went 2-3 in the weekend tournament.
Krissy Mackiewicz started of the game with a single to left center and stole second base to be 60 feet closer to scoring when Carrie Higdon singled through the right side, Mackiewicz stopping at third base. Higdon also stole second to put two Colonials in scoring position for Katie Terrazas, as she singled through the right side of the field, batting both GW runners in to take an early 2-0 lead.
In the second inning, Amanda Gabriel led off the inning with a single, but was picked off at first base. Amanda Holst kept the GW momentum up with a hit up the middle, followed by a Mackiewicz double to center field that allowed Holst to move to third base. After a BU pitching change, Higdon came up with a RBI single for the Colonials.
BU got a homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 3-1.
GW increased their lead to 4-1, after Terrazas began the inning with a double and pinch runner Ali Waterman advanced to third on a Tori Sensi sacrifice bunt. Waterman scored on a passed ball.
In the sixth, Gabriel hit her second home run of the season to increase the Colonials lead to 5-1.
It was also in the sixth that Boston University had a big inning, scoring five runs to take the lead and get the win.
Gabriel took the loss in five and a third innings of work, giving up 10 hits, six runs (five earned), walking two and striking out three against BU. Clauss came in for two-thirds of an inning in relief, allowing one hit and striking out one.
The Colonials open their Atlantic 10 schedule with two games at Charlotte (11-5), beginning on Friday, Mar. 20, at 4 p.m. and Saturday, Mar. 21 at 12:00 p.m.
