WASHINGTON - Sophomore Meghan Rico tossed the Colonials' first shutout of the season as the George Washington softball team beat Brown, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus on the final day of the Capital Invitational.

GW (10-15-1) finished the weekend a perfect 5-0 and is 9-1-1 in its last 11 games.

Rico (6-6) allowed just three hits and walked three with a season-high nine strikeouts in the complete game victory.

Freshman Megan Linn and junior Victoria Valos each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Valos had an RBI and scored a run while Linn scored twice.

Rico and Brown starter Jessica Cherness were locked in a scoreless tie for three innings, but GW scored twice in the fourth. Linn legged out an bunt single to lead off the inning and Valos doubled to put runners on second and third. With one out, freshman Jillian Galich laid down a squeeze bunt to drive in Linn, and sophomore Carlee Gray followed with another suicide squeeze to bring home Valos for the 2-0 lead.

The Colonials added an insurance run in the sixth when Linn again led off with a single, stole second and scored on Valos' single up the middle. The RBI was the 104th of Valos' career, breaking former teammate Autumn Taylor's all-time program record of 103.

Rico then struck out the side in the top of the seventh to finish off the 3-0 victory.

Cherness (1-6) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on four hits with four strikeouts in six innings.

The Colonials return to action on Thursday when they host Colgate in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
