WASHINGTON – The George Washington softball team held Hampton scoreless for 13 innings en route to a doubleheader sweep over the Lady Pirates on Tuesday afternoon at Mount Vernon Field.

The Colonials (9-16) blanked the visitors, 3-0, in Game 1 for their fourth shutout of the season, and went on to defeat the Lady Pirates, 3-2, in Game 2 to complete the sweep.

In the first contest, GW tallied three runs in the bottom of the first inning and added two in the bottom of the fifth to secure the shutout. Hampton registered five hits but was unable to push any runs across the plate.

Wilson opened the game with a walk and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Samantha Dos Santos and groundout by junior Autumn Taylor. Lenhart drove Wilson home with a single up the middle to put the Colonials on the board, then scored on Valos' two-run home run down the left line.

In the bottom of the fifth, senior Amanda Zakeri hit a leadoff double over the head of the third baseman, followed by a Wilson single to put two runners on base. Dos Santos hit her second sacrifice bunt of the afternoon to move the runners up, and Zakeri came home on a Taylor groundout. Wilson then touched home on a wild pitch for the Colonials’ final run.

Senior Kara Clauss (6-10) earned her fourth shutout of the season after allowing just five hits while walking none. Travonna Byrd suffered the loss for the Lady Pirates, as she allowed five runs on seven hits and walked four.

In Game 2, Hampton put two runs on the board in the top of the seventh inning to cut GW’s lead to one, second baseman Sharde Estep grounded out with runners on first and second to end the game.

The Buff and Blue took a 1-0 lead through two innings after Valos, who had doubled to center field to lead off the inning, scored on a throwing error by the catcher. The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth, when Wilson scored on a sacrifice fly by Lenhart. Dos Santos scored GW’s final run of the afternoon on junior Julie Orlandi's single down the right field line.
