Softball Drops Heartbreaker To Fordham, 2-1

March 23, 2007

Box Score

Bronx, NY - Megan Waldron led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a home run to lead Fordham University (13-12, 1-0 A-10) to a 2-1 victory over George Washington University (10-10, 0-3 A-10) in an Atlantic 10 matchup at Bahoshy Field. The blast was Waldron's first home run of the season.

The Colonials, who only mustered one hit on the day, got on the board first with an RBI single by Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA) in the third inning. With one out, freshman flex/pitcher Amanda Gabriel (Fullerton, CA) got plunked by Fordham right-hander Sara Kinney. Junior Chrysanthi Halkiotis (Brookeville, MD) sacrificed her to second before Meyers drove Gabriel in with a single to left.

The Rams rallied for the tie in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly by Erin Fisher. With one out, Jessica Weckenman doubled to right center and Melissa Andrews followed her with a single and advanced to second on the throw. Fisher then flied out to deep left allowing Weckenman to score from third.

Fordham brought in Nicole Ayres to replace Kinney in the eighth and got through the inning without any damage. Waldron then led off the eighth with a walk-off home run.

Ayres got the win for the Rams despite Kinney going seven strong innings allowing just one run on one hit, while striking out eight.

Gabriel received the loss for GW pitching a complete game allowing just two runs on five hits.

The Colonials will meet the Rams again tomorrow at 12:00 pm in the second game of the two-game series.
