GW Softball Drops Two to Reigning A-10 Champion Fordham
March 25, 2012
On the strength of powerful pitching by Fordham's Jen Mineau, the Colonials (9-19) were edged by the Rams (16-14), 2-1, in the first game and dropped the second, 5-1. Fordham’s senior ace pitched back-to-back complete games against GW, allowing just six hits and striking out 19 batters on the afternoon.
In Game 1, pitching was the dominating factor as neither team could register a hit until the third inning. The Rams scored two runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead, including a home run to left field for the first hit of the contest.
The Colonials’ lone hit came in the bottom of the fifth when freshman Victoria Valos hit a lead-off homer to left field to cut Fordham’s lead to one.
GW sophomore Courtney Martin (1-5) suffered the loss on the mound after allowing just five hits and striking out four. Fordham’s Mineau struck out 13 in the contest.
In Game 2, the Rams jumped out to a 3-0 lead to open the first inning off of a three-run double to left center. The visitors added two more runs in the top of the third to extend the lead to 5-0.
Junior Tara Fogarty put GW on the board in the bottom of the fifth when she slammed her first career home run to left field. The Colonials recorded two more hits in the remaining innings but could not push anyone across the plate.
Senior pitcher Kara Clauss (6-11) took the loss. She struck out two and allowed nine hits. Mineau (12-8) allowed five GW hits and walked one while striking out six.
The Buff and Blue head to nearby UMBC on Tuesday, March 27 for a 2 p.m. game.
