GW Softball Blanked by Drexel, 3-0
Colonials Host Atlantic 10 Doubleheader with Rival Charlotte on Sunday
March 29, 2012
WASHINGTON - Drexel scored a run in each of the first three innings to defeat the George Washington softball team, 3-0, on Thursday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Drexel hurler Shelby Taylor (6-6) limited the Colonials to just four hits in the complete game shutout. GW freshman Chelsey Pedley (1-3) pitched well, allowing two earned runs on six hits in 5.1 innings of work in the loss. Sophomore Courtney Martin finished the game on the mound, retiring all five batters faced.
The Dragons (13-13) used two hits and a stolen base to get on the scoreboard in the first, then capitalized on three GW errors in the second to take a 2-0 lead. First baseman Jenn Reading led off the third inning with a single before catcher Maddison Timoteo's double put runners on second and third with no outs for second baseman Sylvia Llamas, whose fly ball to center was enough to score Reading for the third and final run of the game.
The Colonials (9-21) had runners in scoring position in each of the next two innings, but were unable to push a run across. In the fourth, sophomore Chelsea Lenhart hit a lead-off double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, junior Tara Fogarty smashed a fly ball to deep center field that looked destined to drop safely, but Drexel center fielder Comfort Ahonkhai made a great running catch before plowing into the fence to preserve the shutout.
The Colonials return to action on Sunday when they host Atlantic 10 Conference rival Charlotte in a doubleheader at GW Softball Field beginning at 12 p.m.
