Gabriel Gets Game-Winning Hit to Beat The Mount, 5-4
March 31, 2009
WASHINGTON, DC - With two runners on and two out in the bottom of the seventh, junior Amanda Gabriel came up with the game-winning single for The George Washington University softball team to beat Mount St. Mary's, 5-4, in game two of a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday.
To start the seventh inning, senior Tori Sensi got on with a single to center field and junior Elisa Van Kirk got on base on a fielder's choice as The Mount fielders tried to get the lead runner. After freshman Ali Waterman entered the game to pinch run for Van Kirk, freshman Lauren Wilson laid down a sac bunt to push the runners up a base.
Gabriel also led of the bottom of the fourth inning with her third homerun of the season over the left field wall.
The Colonials were able to take advantage scoring runs in the later innings and battled back after The Mount put up four runs in the third inning.
Freshman Heidi Penna (1-1) earned the victory for her first career win as a Colonial. Penna worked all seven innings, allowing nine hits, four earned runs, walked one batter, and struck out two.
The Colonials next host local rival George Mason for a non-conference doubleheader, Wednesday, April 1, at the Mount Vernon Softball Field, starting at 2:00 p.m.
