CHARLOTTE, NC - Freshman righthander Amanda Gabriel (7-5) pitched a complete game shutout to lead the George Washington Colonials (14-12, 1-4 A-10) to a 2-0 victory over the Charlotte 49ers (20-15, 0-3 A-10) in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the Phillips Complex. Gabriel earned her second shutout of the season while allowing just five hits and striking out two.

The Colonials got on the board first with a solo home run by junior Jackie Yaniga off Charlotte right-hander Kristen Bowen, to lead off the third inning (GW leads, 1-0). Redshirt freshman Elisa Van Kirk then walked, and was pinch ran for by senior Janelle Parker. Freshman Amanda Holst sacrificed her over with a bunt down the third base line. With one out, junior Chrysanthi Halkiotis reached on a fielders choice, as the 49ers failed to catch the lead runner, Parker, at third. Senior Elana Meyers came up next and hit a sharp ground ball to shortstop Cee Brooks. Brooks checked Parker at third, and threw the ball wide of the third baseman, and into the 49ers dug out, scoring Parker (GW leads, 2-0).

The Colonials managed just three hits in the game, all of which went for extra bases with Yaniga's solo blast in the third, Meyers' double in the fifth and Halkiotis' two-out double in the seventh. GW also took advantage of five walks.

Bowen took the loss for the 49ers as she too pitched a complete game allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out five.
