Softball Splits With Charlotte, Falls 9-4 In Game 2

April 1, 2007

Box Score

CHARLOTTE, NC - Junior Jackie Yaniga connected on a two run home run and sophomore Tori Sensi added a solo shot, but it was not enough to propel the George Washington Colonials (14-13, 1-5 A-10) to a victory over the Charlotte 49ers (21-15, 1-3 A-10) in the second game of a doubleheader, Sunday afternoon. The Colonials earned the split of the doubleheader by shutting out Charlotte 2-0 in the first game and falling 9-4 in the second.

The Colonials got on the board first with a two-run home run in the top of the second off the bat of junior Jackie Yaniga, her second of the day. Junior Katie Miller had reached on an error by 49er third baseman Lauren Schmitz just prior.

The 49ers responded for two runs of their own to tie the game in their half of the inning off GW sophomore righthander Carrie Higdon. Charlotte took a 5-2 lead with two more runs in the bottom of third inning and one in the fourth.

With one out in the top of the fifth sophomore Tori Sensi took the first offering from Charlotte righthander Christy Murray deep to left center to cut the lead to 5-3. The solo shot was her first career home run. The rain started coming down midway through the top of the fifth and play suspended in between innings.

The Colonials added one more in the sixth with an RBI double by senior Elana Meyers which scored fellow senior Janelle Parker from second.

With the score 5-4, Charlotte erupted for four runs in their half of the sixth off relief pitchers, junior Lisa Cohen and Amanda Gabriel to make it 9-4.

Higdon got the loss for the Colonials while Murray earned the win for the 49ers.

The Colonials will be back in action later this week as they play four Atlantic 10 games in three days. They will host Saint Joseph's on Thursday, April 5, and Friday, April 6 at 2:00 pm. Temple comes to town for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 7 at 12:00 pm.
