April 3, 2010
ST. LOUIS -- The George Washington softball team fell to the Saint Louis Billikins on Saturday in two Atlantic 10 Conference match-ups. The Colonials fell to 4-19, 1-7 in A-10 play while the Billikins improve to 18-12, 6-0.
In game one, SLU starter Kelcie Matesa held the Colonials to three hits. The Billikins were two up on the Colonials by the bottom of the second when the Colonials began to put the pressure in the top of the third.
Kara Clauss began the inning with a single up the middle. Jordyn O'Donnell advanced pinch runner Elaine Necisio to second on a fielders choice. Julie Orlandi loaded the bases on an error by SLU's third baseman. GW was unable to push one across the plate as SLU retired the next three batters to end the inning.
Freshman Autumn Taylor led off the fourth inning with a sharp double to left center. Sandi Moynihan advanced Taylor to third with single, and then stole second base to put runners at second and third with one out. Relief pitcher Nescio lined out and O'Donnell grounded out to end the inning.
SLU put three more runs on the board late in the game for the 5-0 win in the first game.
In the second game, freshman Tara Fogarty had two of the Colonials five hits. GW held SLU off the board until the third, when the Billikins scratched a single run over the plate on two errors by starter Heidi Penna.
In the fifth inning, Penna got the first two batters to fly out to right field but gave up back-to-back doubles, scoring the first run of the inning. Penna gave up a third hit, which scored a second run, before Nescio came into the game. Nescio got the next batter to fly out.
The Colonials continue their road trip to face Southern Illinois-Edwardsville for one game on Sunday, April 4 at noon.
