Softball Blanks Saint Joseph's, 2-0

April 5, 2007

Box Score

WASHINGTON, DC - Freshman Amanda Gabriel (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills) pitched her third shutout of the season, setting a new Colonials single season record, as the George Washington Colonials (15-13, 2-5 A-10) defeated the Saint Joseph's Hawks (6-15, 1-2 A-10), 2-0 in an Atlantic 10 conference matchup. Gabriel allowed just three hits and at one point retired 11 straight batters. The Fullerton, CA native did not allow a Hawk past second base on the day.

The Colonials got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior Colleen Kegler (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) led off the inning with a single up the middle. With two outs, junior Chrysanthi Halkiotis (Brookeville, MD/Sherwood) folllowed with a single to right field. Freshman Amanda Holst (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) came into the game to run for Kegler. Senior Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA/Lithia Springs) next singled off the foot of pitcher Lauren Cognigni, which ricocheted through the right side of the infield to score Holst from second, and advancing Halkiotis to third. Junior Caroline Howe (Los Alamitos, CA/Los Alamitos) provided some extra insurance with another single up the middle to score Halkiotis, giving GW a 2-0 advantage.

Gabriel (8-5) earned the win with her tenth complete game of the season striking out two and not allowing a walk. Cognigni (4-7) got the loss for Hawks allowing two runs on eight hits, while striking out six.

The same two teams will meet on Friday, April 6, at the Mount Vernon Softball Complex at 2:00 pm. The Colonials will also be in action on Saturday, April 7, when they host conference rival, Temple, for a 12:00 pm doubleheader.
