Softball Silences Saint Joseph's, 1-0

Junior Colleen Kegler (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) singled through the right side of the infield to give the George Washington Colonials (16-13, 3-5 A-10) a 1-0 Atlantic 10 conference victory, in eight innings, over Saint Joseph's (6-16, 1-3 A-10) at the Mount Vernon Softball Complex on Friday afternoon.

Junior Caroline Howe (Los Alamitos, CA/Los Alamitos) led off the eighth inning reaching on an error by Hawks shortstop Dani Gonzales. Sophomore Tori Sensi (Skillman, NJ/Montgomery) sacrificed her over with a bunt to the second baseman to set up the game-winner.

Freshman Amanda Gabriel (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills) recorded her fourth shutout and 11th complete game of the year, to get her ninth win of the season, allowing just three hits in eight innings, while striking out a career-high 12 batters. Gabriel (9-5) did not allow a runner past second base for the second straight game.

Senior Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA/Lithia Springs) led GW offensively with three hits, including a double. Juniors Chrysanthi Halkiotis (Brookeville, MD/Sherwood) and Jackie Yaniga (Miami, FL/Southwest Miami) also recorded two hits on the day.

Lauren Cognigni received the loss for the Hawks allwoing one unearned run on eight hits, in 7.1 innings of work.

The Colonials will be back in action on Saturday, April 7, when they host conference rival, Temple, in a 12:00 pm doubleheader at the Mount Vernon Softball Complex.
