Dayton Takes A-10 Doubleheader From Softball

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University softball team was playing its first games at home in 10 days Saturday afternoon, but the visiting Dayton Flyers spoiled the Colonials return winning both games of an Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader, 4-1 and 3-2, at Mount Vernon Softball Field. Sophomore leftfielder Chrysanthi Halkiotis (Brookeville, MD) had five hits in the two games to lead the Colonials.
With the losses, GW falls to 20-20 overall, 3-9 in the A-10, while Dayton improves to 12-21 overall, 6-6 in conference play. Sophomore RHP Jen Hrycyna (North Brunswick, NJ) pitched 9.2 innings for the Colonials on the afternoon, as she came on in relief in game one and tossed a complete game in the nightcap.
In the opener, Dayton struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Centerfielder Tamsyn Kellough, who finished 2-for-2, delivered a two-run double to make it 2-0. The Flyers extended their lead with two more runs in the fourth, as catcher Laura Matthews had an RBI single and second baseman Ellie Malchow delivered a sac fly to make it 4-0.
GW was able to get on the board in sixth as freshman Maryanne Mohan (Portland, OR) led off and reached on an error by first baseman Christine Eggers. Two batters later, Mohan scored to make it 4-1 on another error by Eggers.
The Colonials out-hit the Flyers, 7-5, but Melissa Myher struck out four and didn't allow an earned run to secure the complete-game victory. GW starter Gabby Culp (Desoto, TX) (8-5) was hit with the loss after allowing three earned runs in 4.1 innings of work. Halkiotis finished 3-for-3, while shortstop Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA) went 2-for-4.

In game two, the Flyers scored three runs in the top of the first as they were aided by two errors from Meyers and a pair of passed balls from catcher Nikki Brooks (Chillicothe, OH) to take a 3-0 lead.
Myher started game two for Dayton once again and made the lead stand as she went the distance allowing just two runs with three strikeouts. GW had its offensive chances, but stranded 10 total runners on base in the game, including two runners each in the second, fourth and sixth innings, and the bases loaded in the fifth.
GW cut the lead to 3-1 in the second as sophomore Teresa Thomas (Kintnersville, PA) drove in pinch runner Janelle Parker (Mt. Vernon, NY), who subbed in for sophomore Lisa Cohen (Langhorne, PA) after a lead-off single. Pinch hitter Jackie Yaniga (Miami, FL) hit a one-out solo home run, her fourth, in the sixth for the final margin.
Halkiotis, Cohen and freshman Tori Sensi (Skillman, NJ) each had two hits to pace GW. Hrycyna (4-6) suffered the loss as she went the distance with two strikeouts and one walk.
The Colonials (20-20, 3-9 A-10) return to action when they host Howard in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday, April 17, at 3 p.m. at Mount Vernon Field.
