Softball Splits A-10 Doubleheader with Rhode Island
April 19, 2009
KINGSTON, RI - The Colonials softball team found some first inning power from junior Elisa Van Kirk, as she hit a two-run home run against Rhode Island in game one of an Atlantic 10 doubleheader. GW went on to win game one 3-1m but the Colonials fell to the Rams in game two, 7-0.
Van Kirk hit her second home run of the season on the first pitch of her at-bat, hitting in Katie Terrazas, who singled the at-bat before, and taking an early 2-0 lead.
Freshman Krissy Mackiewicz hit her second home run of the season in the seventh inning.
Junior Amanda Gabriel (8-14) pitched seven innings in the win. Gabriel allowed three hits, one unearned run, struck out seven and walked none.
Game two was a different story as freshman Kara Clauss got the start for the Colonials. Clauss (4-7) only went one and a third innings, collecting the loss after allowing five earned runs on six hits.
Gabriel came in for two and two-thirds innings in relief, allowing one earned run on three hits and striking out four URI batters.
Freshman Heidi Penna took the ball for the last two innings of the game, allowing two hits, one earned run, walking two and striking out two.
The Colonials' bats went silent as Rams' starting pitcher Jayshree Narendran only allowed two GW hits. Wilson hit a single to left field but was caught stealing for the third out of the fifth inning. GW's second hit came in the sixth as Mackiewicz singled to keep the inning going, but was left stranded as the next batter grounded out.
GW (13-27, 4-11 A-10) home game against Georgetown, Tuesday, April 21, at the Mount Vernon Softball Field was cancelled. The Colonials will hit the road to play at Towson on Thursday April 23, for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
