Softball Sweeps George Mason on Wednesday
Colonials triumph in pair of A-10 games
WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team swept Revolutionary Rival George Mason in an Atlantic 10 doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (23-19, 6-8 A-10) shut out Mason in game one with a 3-0 victory before out-hitting the Patriots in game two for a 9-5 triumph to earn a point in the year-long Revolutionary Rivalry.
The Buff and Blue finished the scoring in the third beginning with junior Rochelle Draper's first home run of the season to right center - a solo shot to lead off the frame. Freshman Jenna Cone later reached base on a single and crossed the plate on an RBI double from Martinez.
The Colonials held Mason to just two hits en route to a 3-0 opening victory. Freshman Kaitlin Buff (6-4) tossed seven innings of one-hit ball after entering the circle in relief of junior Sarah Costlow, who faced three batters.
GW exploded for four runs in the first inning of game two. Senior Megan Linn doubled to start the stanza and scored on a single from Cone. Martinez then doubled in Cone and went on to score on a two-run blast from Kovalsky - her second homer of the season - to put the Colonials ahead, 4-0.
Mason responded with three runs in the second, but the Colonials tallied one more in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Linn.
The Patriots again came within one with a run in the third, but the Colonials began to break away with two runs in the fourth. A sac fly off the bat of Linn plated one before Martinez knocked in the second with a single to right, giving GW a 7-4 advantage.
One more Mason run in the fifth was no match for GW. The Colonials put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the frame when sophomore Riley Tejcek tripled in one and a sac bunt from junior Morgan Rinehart gave GW a 9-5 lead it would never surrender.
Buff earned her second win of the day with four innings of relief, yielding just one run on three hits.
The Colonials now hit the road for a three-game weekend series at Fordham beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday.
