Gabriel Records Third Straight Shutout, Softball Splits with Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The George Washington University softball team kept its Atlantic 10 Tournament hopes alive with a split with conference rival Saint Joseph's Sunday afternoon. The Colonials shutout the Hawks in the opener, 3-0 in eight innings, but fell, 4-3 in the nightcap.
Sophomore Amanda Gabriel pitched her third consecutive shutout in the opener, allowing just five hits and a walk, while fanning eight Hawks.
Gabriel outdid SJU pitcher Dani Gonzalas who gave up three unearned runs, all in the eighth.
The score remained deadlocked at zero until the Colonials scored three runs on two hits in the top of the eighth. Junior Carrie Higdon led off the inning by reaching on a fielding error by the shortstop. Another single by junior Tori Sensi advanced Higdon to third. A walk issued to senior Jackie Yaniga then loaded the bases for Gabriel, who reached on an RBI fielder's choice. Gabriel was followed by senior Katie Miller, who broke the game open with a two-run double to left center, scoring Sensi and Yaniga.
Gabriel pitched a perfect bottom half, including a strikeout to record the win.
Freshman Katie Terrazas added a pair of hits, while redshirt sophomore Elisa Van Kirk also chipped in with a base-hit.
Game two was more action packed with GW taking the loss despite another solid performance in the circle by Gabriel.
GW took the early lead, 2-0 with a pair of runs in the first inning. Senior Chrysanthi Halkiotis was hit by a pitch to open the game, and advanced to second when Sensi reached on a fielder's choice. Yaniga then sacrificed both runners into scoring position with a bunt to the pitcher. Gabriel then helped her own cause with a two-run single up the middle.

The two-run advantage was short lived as the Hawks tied the game with two runs of their own thanks to a pair of hits, and a pair of defensive errors by GW.
Halkiotis slugged a two-out home run in the fifth to give the Colonials a 3-2 lead, but the Colonials were not able to hold as SJU scored a pair of runs in the sixth to record the victory.
Gabriel took the loss despite all four runs being unearned on six hits, while striking out five. The native of Fullerton, CA also drove in two runs in the nightcap.
Terrazas recorded another two-hit performance in game two, while Higdon added one. Halkiotis' home run was her fifth of the season, and team-leading 21st RBI.
Miller also drew a pair of walks in the second game.
The Colonials return home Tuesday, April 29 as they take on crosstown rival Howard in a non-conference doubleheader.
