April 29, 2003
WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington Colonials Softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Maryland on Tuesday, April 29 in College Park, MD. The two 6-0 losses dropped the Colonials record to 3-32 on the season.
The Colonial hitters were baffled in game one by Maryland pitchers Monica Cyphert and Liz Gall, who combined to pitch a no-hitter. Maryland jumped ahead in the bottom of the first with two runs. GW held Maryland scoreless over the next two innings but were unable to mount any offense. Maryland added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth and secured the 6-0 victory with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
GW started the second game with a single by freshman Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA/Lithia Springs), but she was erased on a double play by the Terps. Maryland jumped ahead in the bottom of the first with two runs. The Colonials tried to answer back in the top of the second but could not capitalize on a lead-off single by sophomore Jen Lawrence (Nassau, NY/Columbia).
Maryland took advantage of an error in the bottom of the second to add another run. They tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, while holding the Colonials at bay to complete their second 6-0 win of the day.
The Colonials will travel to New England over the weekend to finish off their inaugural season with doubleheaders against Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
