Softball Drops Series Opener on Saturday
Colonials finish regular season on Sunday
WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball squad dropped the series opener to A-10 foe Rhode Island on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (26-24, 9-12 A-10) scored first, but a fifth-inning surge by the Rams proved too much for GW.
The Buff and Blue took an early lead in the first as senior Megan Linn walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a fielder's choice from freshman Jenna Cone. GW tacked on one more in the second when rookie Elena Shelepak led off the frame with a single and scored on classmate Gabby Gallone's triple to right to put the Colonials ahead 2-0.
URI broke through in the fourth, scoring one, before putting up six runs in the fifth on five hits to move ahead, 7-2.
GW answered with two runs in the bottom of the stanza, courtesy of a two-run double from senior Paige Kovalsky with the bases loaded to put GW within 7-4.
An unearned run for the Rams in the seventh added insurance before the Colonials' rally fell short, plating just one run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kovalsky, putting the final score at 8-5 in favor of the visitors.
Seven different Colonials tallied hits on the day.
GW will wrap the regular season on Sunday with a Senior Day doubleheader against URI beginning at noon. Kovalsky and Linn will be honored at approximately 11:40 a.m. in a pregame ceremony.
