May 9, 2007

Box Score

AMHERST, MA - The George Washington Colonials (23-27) fell to the Charlotte 49ers (33-22), 4-2, in the elimination game of the 2007 Atlantic 10 Championships on Wednesday afternoon at the UMass Softball Complex. Sophomore Tori Sensi led the Colonials offensively with two hits and an RBI.

Junior Hilary King led off the top of the second with an eleven-pitch walk. Next, junior Colleen Kegler reached first on a fielder's choice, as King advanced to second on an error. A sacrifice bunt by junior Jackie Yaniga put two runners in scoring position for Sensi. Sensi delivered with a bloop single to centerfield to score King from third for the lone run of the inning.

Junior right-hander Katie Miller held Charlotte in check until the 49ers found gold in the fourth inning with four runs. Becky Matthews led off the rally with a one-out double to right-center. Matthews advanced to third on a wild pitch. Cee Brooks then walked and stole second without a throw. A bloop single over Sensi by Lauren Schmitz scored Matthews and advancing Brooks to third. Schmitz then stole second but an error allowed Brooks to score. Kaycie Jones next singled to left driving in Schmitz from second. Brittany Cantrell ran for Jones and eventually scored after a single by Emily Forbes, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly by Jenny Rumbles.

The Colonials got one back in the fifth when a single by King scored junior Chrysanthi Halkiotis, who singled up the middle to lead off the inning.

Junior pitcher Lisa Cohen entered the game for the Colonials behind 4-2 to start the fifth inning and pitched the remainder of the game unscathed.

Christy Murray allowed just two runs for the 49ers in the complete game victory.
