USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Watch List

OKLAHOMA CITY - GW's Jenna Cone has been named to the Top 50 Watch List for the 2018 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, the organization announced Wednesday.

Cone earned the mention among the nation's elite on the heels of a historic debut season in Buff and Blue. The sophomore from California was the lone representative from the Atlantic 10 on the list, which highlights the top candidates for the sport's most prestigious honor. She was one of only nine sophomores recognized, as well.

Last spring, Cone was named A-10 Rookie of the Year and earned spots on the All-Conference and NFCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Teams after hitting .395 and setting program records for home runs (18), slugging percentage (.822), on-base percentage (.500), runs scored (47) and RBIs (59). Playing primarily at third base, she led the A-10 in homers and ranked second in batting average for the spring.

"It's a great and well-deserved honor for Jenna to represent GW on this list," head coach James DeFeo said. "It's a true testament to her hard work and dedication to her game. We look forward to Jenna's continued excellence, as well as her teammates."

Cone and the Colonials kick off the new season Feb. 16 with a matchup against Florida A&M at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla.

USA Softball will release its 25 finalists on April 25 before trimming the list to 10 and then three. The award winner is set to be revealed May 29.
