GW vs. #20/21 Minnesota, Friday, 1 p.m. - Live Stats
WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team heads south this weekend for its third straight tournament when it travels to Greensboro, N.C., for the UNCG Spartan Classic. The Colonials will face No. 20/21 Minnesota, Army, Hampton and host UNC Greensboro in the three-day tournament.
GW opens the tournament against Minnesota, its third ranked opponent of the young season, on Friday at 1 p.m. before and the host Spartans on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The Colonials will conclude the weekend on Sunday with games against Army at 9 a.m. and Hampton at 2:30 p.m.
GW is coming off a trip to Baton Rouge, La., for the LSU Tiger Invitational. Freshman Mary Wiley led the Colonials with a .462 average (6-for-13) and .611 on-base percentage, while classmate Jillian Galich hit .375 (6-for-16) with four RBIs. Junior Victoria Valos also had four RBIs, batting .333 (5-for-15) on the weekend with a pair of doubles among her five hits.
The Colonials' freshman class has had a strong start to the season, as Galich (.391), rookie Megan Linn (.323) and Wiley (.318) are GW's top three hitters through 10 games. Galich leads the Colonials with six RBIs, while Linn boasts a team-best 10 hits and seven runs scored and Wiley's .444 on-base percentage is tops on the team.
Valos, meanwhile, continues to climb GW's record books. With her four RBIs last weekend, she tied Jackie Yaniga ('08) for second place with 91 career RBIs, just 12 behind former teammate Autumn Taylor. Valos is also third all-time with 23 home runs, one behind Taylor in second and three shy of Yaniga's program record.
Minnesota (8-1) won its first eight games of the season before falling to top-ranked Florida on Sunday at the Easton Desert Classic in Las Vegas. Kaitlyn Richardson is batting a team-best .462 with four doubles and 10 RBIs. She is one of three Golden Gophers hitting better than .400 on the season. Sara Moulton has four shutouts among her six starts in the circle. She is 5-1 with a 1.73 ERA and 48 strikeouts against just eight walks in 36.1 innings of work.
Friday marks the first-ever meeting between GW and Minnesota.
An NCAA Tournament qualifier last season after winning the Patriot League, Army (0-5) opened its season last weekend at the Houston Invite against Stephen F. Austin, Nebraska and host Houston. Kasey McCravey hit .563 (9-for-16) with three doubles and three RBIs during the opening weekend.
GW is 7-3 all-time against Army, but the Black Knights won the last meeting, 5-4, in eight innings at the 2012 Colonial Classic.
UNC Greensboro (2-5) lost both games of a doubleheader to Virginia Tech on Tuesday. Katelyn Bedwell is the Spartans' top hitter, batting .500 (10-for-20) with three extra-base hits and eight RBIs. UNCG is hitting .282 as a team but has been outscored, 51-27, on the season.
GW and UNCG have not met since the 2005 New Triangle Classic in Raleigh, N.C., where the teams split a pair of games, and Saturday's matchup will be just the third ever between the two teams.
Another NCAA Tournament participant a year ago after winning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Hampton is 1-4 after opening the season at the Hawaii Paradise Classic. Diamond Ponds is hitting a team-best .400 (4-for-10) but is one of just two Lady Pirates hitting better than .300.
The Colonials are 3-1 all-time against the Lady Pirates, most recently sweeping a home doubleheader in 2012. Valos was 3-for-5 with a double and a home run in those two games, while senior Courtney Martin tossed 3.2 scoreless innings of relief against Hampton in 2011, allowing just two hits while striking out three batters.
