Feb. 24, 2014
WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team opens its home slate on Tuesday afternoon against Delaware State, the first of 29 straight games for the Colonials at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus. First pitch against the Hornets is scheduled for 3 p.m.
GW (1-13) picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, a 2-1 extra-inning victory over host UNC Greensboro at the UNCG Spartan Classic. Freshman Marissa Mangini's squeeze bunt in the bottom of the eighth plated classmate Bradleigh Breland with the winning run.
Senior Courtney Martin was strong in the circle over the weekend at UNCG, posting a 2.33 ERA in 19.1 innings of work spanning four appearances.
The Colonials' freshman class has had an impressive start to the season as rookies Megan Linn (.326) and Jillian Galich (.314) are GW's top two hitters through 14 games. Galich leads the Colonials with seven RBIs after hitting her first career home run on Sunday against Army, while Linn boasts a team-best 14 hits and eight runs scored to go with six RBIs. Freshman Mary Wiley leads the team with a .421 on-base percentage and seven walks.
Junior Victoria Valos continues to climb GW's record book as she moved past Jackie Yaniga ('08) into sole possession of second place all-time at GW with 92 career RBIs, just 11 behind former teammate Autumn Taylor.
Delaware State (5-2) has won four straight after a perfect weekend at the Norfolk State Spartan Classic with wins over La Salle, Fairleigh Dickinson and Wagner. Jordan Stamps is hitting a team-best .400 with seven RBIs, while Sandy Hawthorne is batting .389 and slugging .722 with three doubles and a home run. Tara Tursellino paces DSU in the circle with a 4-0 record and a 1.19 ERA over 17.2 innings of work, all in relief.
Tuesday's game will be the first-ever meeting between GW and Delaware State.
