WASHINGTON - Following a near two-week break from games, the George Washington softball team opens its home slate this weekend with the Colonials Tournament, hosting Binghamton, Howard, Mount St. Mary's and Wagner for the three-day tournament Friday-Sunday at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
GW (1-13) has not played since the UNCG Spartan Classic Feb. 21-23 due to a series of weather cancellations.
The Colonials' freshman class has had an impressive start to the season as rookies Megan Linn (.326) and Jillian Galich (.314) are GW's top two hitters through 14 games. Galich leads the Colonials with seven RBIs after hitting her first career home run against Army in Greensboro, while Linn boasts a team-best 14 hits and eight runs scored to go with six RBIs. Freshman Mary Wiley leads the team with a .421 on-base percentage and seven walks.
Binghamton, which was picked to finish third in the America East preseason poll, is 3-5 on the season after a 1-2 showing at the UNLV Eller Media Stadium Classic. Lisa Cadogan (.350) and Bridget Hunt (.348) lead five Bearcats who are hitting better than .300 on the season, while Sydney Harbaugh has a team-high eight RBIs. GW won its two previous meetings with Binghamton, most recently a 4-2 victory at the 2010 Colonial Classic.
Howard opens its season this weekend after doubleheaders against Lafayette and Towson were canceled last week. The Bison finished 2013 with a 3-29 overall record, but return leading hitter Anasia Stinson, who batted .347 last season. GW is 2-0 all-time against Howard, winning both games of a doubleheader in 2006 by a combined score of 29-0.
Mount St. Mary's, which was added to the Colonials Tournament lineup this week, is 6-5 on the season after going 2-1 at the USF Under Armour Invitational last week, including 1-0 victories over Temple and Florida Atlantic. Rachel Heinze leads the Mount in hitting at .292 with five RBIs, while Nicole Pagano has been the ace in the circle, going 5-2 with a 0.61 ERA and 54 strikeouts against just nine walks.
GW holds a 10-7 all-time series advantage against Mount St. Mary's with six straight wins over the last two seasons, including four in 2013. Sophomore Carlee Gray is a career .429 hitter (6-for-14) with three RBIs and junior Victoria Valos is hitting .368 (7-for-19) with two doubles and seven RBIs against the Mount. In the circle, senior Courtney Martin is 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 14 career innings against Mount St. Mary's, while sophomore Meghan Rico is 2-0 with a 0.54 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 13 innings.
Wagner is 2-6 on the season and has lost five straight following the Combat Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C., last weekend. Taylor Beeson and Kelsey Parker are each batting .391 on the year, and Parker has driven in a team-high seven runs. Sunday will mark the first-ever meeting between GW and Wagner.
Following the Colonials Tournament, GW will host Mount St. Mary's for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 11, followed by another doubleheader against Liberty on Wednesday, March 12, before hosting the Capital Invitational next weekend.
