March 14, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University freshman centerfielder Jackie Yaniga (Miami, FL/Southwest Miami) was named the Atlantic 10 Softball Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday, March 14. Yaniga helped lead the Colonials to a doubleheader sweep over Coppin State on March 10 with three home runs and eight RBI.

Yaniga is the first GW softball player to earn A-10 weekly honors this season. She currently leads the team with a .370 batting average, four home runs, three doubles, 14 RBI and a .926 slugging percentage prior to the Colonials' trip to the Rebel Spring Games.

In the first game of the doubleheader against Coppin State, Yaniga went 3-for-4 with a pair of two-run home runs, five RBI and two runs scored to lead GW to a 9-1 win in five innings. In the nightcap, she finished 1-for-1 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored, while also drawing two walks, including one intentional, as the Colonials cruised 12-1 in five innings.

The Colonials are currently in the midst of playing 10 games in five days at the 2005 Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, FL, during spring break, March 14-18. GW posted a 12-1 victory in six innings against Colgate in its opener Monday morning, before falling to Wisconsin-Green Bay, 3-0, in its second game. The Colonials now stand 4-9 overall on the season.
