WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team dropped a pair of games to defending Atlantic 10 champion Fordham on Saturday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus. The Rams edged the Colonials, 2-0, in the first game, then took the nightcap, 10-2, in six innings.
Fordham (15-15, 2-0 A-10) scored the only two runs of Game 1 in the top of the third inning on RBI doubles by Elise Fortier and Gabby Luety.
Sophomore Meghan Rico took the tough-luck loss after allowing just the two runs on seven hits in seven innings. Michelle Daubman (8-8) tossed a one-hitter to pick up the win for the Rams. She walked three and hit two batters while striking out three.
In Game 2, Fordham scored three times in the second and twice in the third to take a 5-0 lead.
Sophomore Morgan Matetic put GW (11-18-1, 0-2 A-10) on the scoreboard in the fourth with her second home run of the season, a two-run shot over the fence in right-center field after freshman Jillian Galich walked to lead off the inning, making it 5-2.
The Rams then scored two more in the fifth for a 7-2 lead, and a three-run homer by Daubman in the top of the sixth gave Fordham the 10-2 win.
Rico (7-9) was charged with eight runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings of work in the loss, while Rachel Gillen (3-3) tossed three scoreless innings in relief to earn the win.
The Colonials return to action on Thursday when they host UMBC in non-conference action. First pitch from GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus is slated for 3 p.m. The game against the Retrievers was originally scheduled for Tuesday afternoon but has been moved to Thursday due to inclement weather in the forecast.
