WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team welcomes Atlantic 10 rival Massachusetts to the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus for a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
GW (11-19-1, 0-2 A-10) is coming off a 10-6 non-conference loss to UMBC on Thursday. Freshman Bradleigh Breland and sophomore Morgan Matetic each had two hits in the game, while sophomore Carlee Gray drove in a pair of runs.
Breland leads four Colonials batting better than .300 on the season at .341, while freshman Megan Linn is close behind at .337 with a team-high 22 RBIs and 21 runs scored. Junior Victoria Valos continues to lead the A-10 with 13 doubles, tied for the third-highest single-season total in program history.
As a team, GW leads the A-10 with 43 stolen bases, paced by Linn (12) and junior Samantha Dos Santos (11), who rank second and third in the league, respectively.
Massachusetts (3-14, 0-2 A-10) has lost six in a row following a doubleheader sweep at Saint Louis last Saturday. Quianna Diaz-Patterson leads the A-10 in on-base percentage (.500) and ranks third in batting average (.400). Taylor Carbone has recorded a team-high 13 RBIs and 12 runs scored. The Minutewomen have been outscored 111-55 on the season.
GW swept a doubleheader from UMass in Amherst last season, earning its first two wins ever over the traditional A-10 powerhouse. Meghan Rico tossed a six-inning shutout with six strikeouts in the 8-0 victory in Game 2.
Following Sunday's doubleheader, the Colonials host Cornell in non-conference action on Wednesday before concluding their five-week home stand with a doubleheader against A-10 rival La Salle on Saturday, April 5.
