Jackie Yaniga Earns A-10 Softball Rookie of the Week Honors

April 4, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University freshman centerfielder Jackie Yaniga (Miami, FL/Southwest Miami) was named the Atlantic 10 Softball Rookie of the Week for her play on March 29 against La Salle, the conference office announced on Monday, April 4. For Yaniga, the honor marks her second A-10 Rookie of the Week accolade this season as she helped the Colonials earn their first conference doubleheader sweep in school history against the Explorers last week.

In GW's first game against La Salle, Yaniga went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base to help the Colonials earn a 7-4 win. Yaniga followed up her game one performance by going 3-for-3 in the nightcap with a double, an RBI, a run scored and a pair of stolen bases to help lead GW to a 4-3 victory and the doubleheader sweep.

In addition, Yaniga extended her team season-high hitting streak to 10 games. In that stretch she is batting .469 with four home runs, 14 RBI and nine runs scored, while slugging .906. As of March 30, Yaniga was leading the A-10 in batting average (.391), home runs (8), RBI (30) and total bases (58), while ranking second in hits (27) and runs scored (16) behind sophomore Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA).

The Colonials (8-16, 3-1 A-10) are back in action when they travel to Harrisonburg, VA, on Wed., April 6, to face James Madison in a non-conference doubleheader set for 2 p.m.
