NEWPORT NEWS, Pa. - George Washington freshman Jillian Galich was named Atlantic 10 Softball Rookie of the Week for games played March 31-April 6, the conference announced on Monday.
Galich, who was also named A-10 Player of the Week by College Sports Madness, batted a team-best .583 (7-for-12) with four doubles and nine RBIs to lead GW to a 3-1 week against Cornell and La Salle. After hitting a two-run double in the opener against the Big Red on Wednesday, she went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a sacrifice fly and four RBIs in the nightcap. The native of Tinley Park., Ill., also went 2-for-3 with a two-run double in the first game against the Explorers.
Riding a five-game hit streak after recording a base hit and an RBI in every game last week, Galich is batting .274 with 20 RBIs this season.
Galich, who shares the award with Massachusetts pitcher Tara Klee, is the third GW freshman to be named A-10 Rookie of the Week this season, as Mary Wiley received the award on March 10 and Megan Linn was recognized on March 17. It marks the first time three different Colonials have won Rookie of the Week in the same season.
Galich and the Colonials return to action on Wednesday when they visit Atlantic 10 newcomer and Revolutionary Rival George Mason for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
