Amanda Gabriel Named Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week

April 9, 2007

WASHINGTON, DC - Freshman Amanda Gabriel (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills) has been named the Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week, the league announced on Monday. The honor is Gabriel's first weekly award of the season.

In three games last week, the freshman righthander was 2-0, allowing just three earned runs in 20 innings (1.05 ERA), and posting two shutouts against Saint Joseph's. The Fullerton, CA, native pitched a combined 15 innings, allowing just six hits, striking out 14 and walking none in the two shutouts against the Hawks. Gabriel did not allow a runner past second base in the two outings.

In a no-decision at home against Temple, Gabriel allowed just three runs on four hits in five innings, while striking out two and walking two. Before allowing a walk in the second inning, the freshman had gone 31.2 innings without allowing a base on balls.

For the season, Gabriel leads the Colonials pitching staff with a 9-5 record and a 2.01 ERA. She already has broken GW's single-season record for shutouts with four and is on pace to break every other Colonials single-season mark in her freshman season.

The Colonials (17-14, 4-6 A-10) return to action on Wednesday, April 11, at 3:00 pm when they travel to take on the James Madison Dukes in a non-conference doubleheader. GW returns home on Saturday, April 18, to take on the St. Bonaventure Bonnies in a 12:00 pm conference doubleheader.
