April 15, 2014
WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team takes a break from Atlantic 10 play on Wednesday for a doubleheader against non-conference foe Hampton. First pitch from Lady Pirates Softball Stadium in Hampton, Va., is set for 2 p.m.
GW (15-23-1) is coming off a doubleheader split with A-10 rival St. Bonaventure on Sunday. Junior Victoria Valos, sophomore Carlee Gray and freshman Megan Linn each had three hits on the day. The Colonials won the first game, 8-0, as sophomore Meghan Rico tossed a three-hit shutout, her third clean sheet of the season.
Linn has reached base safely in a school-record 19 straight games dating to March 11, and she is hitting .394 (26-for-66) with 17 RBIs and 18 runs scored in that span. The freshman has also stolen 20 consecutive bases, another school mark. She leads the Colonials in hitting (.357), RBIs (29), runs (32) and steals (22) on the season.
Valos, who leads the Atlantic 10 with 16 doubles this season, has a hit in 16 of the last 20 games, batting .400 (26-for-65) with 14 extra-base hits and 18 RBIs. In addition, sophomore Morgan Matetic, who is hitting .333 and slugging a team-best .741, continues her breakout campaign with a team-leading five home runs, as 12 of her 18 hits on the year have gone for extra bases.
Hampton (15-17) took two of three from Howard last weekend after it lost four of its previous five games. Margaret Wilkins is batting .388 with eight extra-base hits, 20 RBIs and 24 runs scored, while reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week Danielle Budden is hitting .327 with 11 extra-base hits, 21 RBIs and 21 runs scored. The duo has combined for 28 steals, as well. MEAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year Jailynn Jackson (11-9) paces the Lady Pirates in the circle with a 2.90 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 137.2 innings of work.
GW holds a 3-2 all-time series advantage against Hampton after the Lady Pirates defeated the Colonials, 7-1, in February at the UNC Greensboro Spartan Classic. Valos is 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored in a pair of games in her career against Hampton, while senior Courtney Martin has allowed no runs and just two hits while striking out three in five innings against the Lady Pirates.
