GW Softball's Autumn Taylor Named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week
Victoria Valos Also Earns Weekly Honor From College Sports Madness
April 22, 2013
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Senior Autumn Taylor was named Atlantic 10 Softball Player of the Week for games played April 15-21, the league announced on Monday, after leading George Washington softball to a perfect 4-0 weekend and helping extend the team's school-record win streak to 11.
Taylor batted .538 (7-for-13) and slugged 1.000 with seven RBIs in wins over Atlantic 10 rivals Rhode Island and Massachusetts. She also walked three times, reaching base at a .625 clip. Three of her seven hits went for extra bases and she also scored three runs.
Taylor's best game of the week came at URI on Saturday when she went 3-for-4 with a triple, a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Her two-run homer capped a six-run sixth inning and sent the Colonials to a 9-1 six-inning victory. The center fielder from Severna Park, Md., also drove in three runs in a 2-for-3 effort in the second game against defending A-10 champion UMass on Sunday, to set a new all-time RBIs record with 94 in her career.
Taylor is batting .343 with six home runs and 35 RBIs on the season.
The award is the second Player of the Week nod of Taylor's career; she also garnered the honor on April 30, 2012. She joins alumna Jackie Yaniga as the only Colonials' players to be recognized twice. In addition, this is the second straight week that a Colonial has been tabbed Player of the Week - sophomore Victoria Valos won the award last Monday, marking just the second time ever two GW players have been recognized in the same season, joining Yaniga and Katie Miller in 2008.
Valos was dubbed Atlantic 10 Player of the Week by College Sports Madness on Monday after batting .500 (7-for-14) with seven RBIs and six runs scored. The shortstop from Bakersfield, Calif., slugged .929 with three extra-base hits on the week. Valos went 3-for-4 with a career-high five RBIs, including a three-run home run, in GW's 9-8 win over Rhode Island on Friday, finishing a single shy of the cycle. The homer was her 11th of the season, matching her own single-season school record. She also posted 2-for-3 efforts on Saturday against the Rams and in Sunday's second game against UMass, with an RBI and two runs scored in each game.
Valos is batting .376 and slugging .761 with a school-record 45 RBIs on the year. She ranks second in the A-10 in home runs and RBIs, third in slugging percentage and fourth in runs scored (36).
Taylor, Valos and the Colonials return to action on Wednesday when they visit Atlantic 10 rival La Salle for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
