GW's Heidi Penna Named Atlantic 10 Softball Pitcher of the Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington senior Heidi Penna was named the Atlantic 10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for games played April 16-22, the conference announced Monday. Penna went 2-0 and allowed just one run in 14.2 innings of work for a 0.48 ERA in victories over A-10 rivals La Salle and Dayton. She surrendered just 10 hits and walked four while striking out 17 and holding batters to a .185 average. Penna tossed two complete games, including her first career shutout in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Flyers. The senior from Miami, Fla., matched her career high with nine strikeouts and allowed just one run on six hits and a walk in GW's 4-1 win over La Salle on Thursday. She then returned to the mound to toss a three-hit shutout while striking out six in Saturday's shutout of Dayton. Penna boasts a 1.02 ERA in 27.1 innings pitched over her last six appearances. For the season, she has a 3-1 record and a 1.83 ERA. Penna is the first Colonials' player to earn A-10 Pitcher of the Week since Amanda Gabriel on March 10, 2008. The Colonials (18-27, 8-8 A-10) return to action on Wednesday when they host local rival George Mason in their home finale at 3 p.m.
