Colonials Visit Rams for Doubleheader at Noon
May 1, 2014
WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team wraps up its season on Saturday with a doubleheader at Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island beginning at 12 p.m.
GW (17-30-1, 3-11 A-10) has not played since splitting a doubleheader with A-10 foe Dayton on Sunday in its home finale. Junior Victoria Valos reached base in all seven plate appearances on the day, going 5-for-5 with two doubles, two walks and three steals, while freshman Megan Linn was 4-for-8 with two doubles, a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored. In addition, sophomore Meghan Rico allowed just three hits and matched her season high with nine strikeouts in the Colonials' 3-0 victory in Game 2.
For the season, Linn leads the A-10 with 28 stolen bases and 59 hits and ranks fourth in average (.373) and runs scored (40). Her 59 hits are tied for the second-highest single-season total in program history, while her .373 average and 40 runs scored each rank third and her 35 RBIs are fourth. In addition, Linn's 28 steals are one shy of Amanda Zakeri's team record of 29, set last season.
Valos is hitting .356, which ranks 10th in the A-10, and leads the league with a program-record 19 doubles while ranking third with 39 RBIs - the third-highest single-season total in team history. She is GW's career leader in doubles (41), home runs (27), RBIs (125), extra-base hits (71) and slugging percentage (.619) while ranking second in hits (161), average (.345), runs (101) and total bases (289).
Rico leads the A-10 with 154 strikeouts and ranks fourth with 13 wins on the year.
As a team, GW leads the A-10 with 86 stolen bases - 38 more than any other team in the league. In addition to Linn, junior Samantha Dos Santos ranks third in the conference with 18 steals, while Valos and freshman Bradleigh Breland are tied for sixth with 12 apiece. The Colonials' 86 steals are tied for the single-season team record with the 2012 squad. GW also set a new program record with 70 doubles this season.
The Colonials are batting .280 during conference play, led by Linn at .444, which ranks fourth in the league. In addition, sophomore Morgan Matetic ranks fourth with a .522 on-base percentage and fifth with an .829 slugging percentage against A-10 opponents.
Rhode Island (12-31-1, 5-10-1) is 1-8-1 in its last 10 games after going 0-1-1 at Massachusetts on Tuesday. Taylor Archer leads the Rams with a .261 average and is tied with Jocelyn Mattison for the team lead with 13 RBIs. Sam Bedore paces URI in the circle with nine wins, a 3.12 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 123.1 innings of work. As a team, the Rams rank last in the A-10 in batting average (.215) and runs (99), as they have been outscored, 220-99, on the season.
GW is 13-7 all-time against URI and has won four in a row. Last season, the Colonials swept the Rams, 9-6 and 9-1, on the road. Valos went 5-for-7 with three-extra base hits, six RBIs and four runs scored in the series. She is a career .615 hitter (8-for-13) with nine RBIs in four games against the Rams, while sophomore Carlee Gray is 3-for-6 all-time.
