GW Softball Trio Earns Atlantic 10 Postseason Honors
Linn, Valos Tabbed to All-Conference Second Team
May 6, 2014
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Three George Washington softball players earned Atlantic 10 postseason honors, the league announced on Tuesday afternoon. Junior Victoria Valos and freshman Megan Linn were each tabbed to the All-Conference Second Team, while Linn also earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team. In addition, senior Courtney Martin was selected to the All-Academic Team.
Valos batted .355 and slugged .617 with a program-record 19 doubles, which led the Atlantic 10. She tied for the team lead with six home runs and ranks third in the A-10 with a team-high 42 RBIs, the third-highest single-season total in program history. The native of Bakersfield, California, who matched her own school record with 25 extra-base hits this season, is the only Colonial ever to record both 50 hits and 30 RBIs three times in her career.
Valos is GW's all-time leader in doubles (41), home runs (28), RBIs (128), extra-base hits (72) and slugging percentage (.622), and she ranks second in hits (163), batting average (.345), runs scored (103) and total bases (294), third in on-base percentage (.417) and eighth in steals (22). The team co-captain earns her second career postseason honor from the A-10 after being named to the All-Rookie Team in 2012.
Linn had an outstanding inaugural campaign, setting GW rookie records for hits (61), batting average (.370), runs scored (42), RBIs (35) and on-base percentage (.418) while breaking the Colonials' overall single-season mark with a league-best 30 stolen bases on the year, at one point stealing a record 23 in a row without getting caught. The Corona, California, native reached base safely in the final 30 games of the season - also a program record - a streak which dates back to March 11.
Linn's .370 average ranks sixth in the Atlantic 10 and is the third-highest mark in team history, and she is third in the league in hits - just the second Colonial ever to record at least 60 hits in a season. In addition, her 42 runs scored rank fourth in the A-10 and are the second-highest single-season total by a Colonial, and her 35 RBIs are fourth on GW's single-season list.
Linn is the first GW freshman ever to be named to an all-conference team, and she is the fifth Colonial to be named to the All-Rookie squad in the last four years, joining Chelsea Lenhart (2011), Valos (2012), Carlee Gray (2013) and Meghan Rico (2013).
A team co-captain, Martin earns her second straight All-Academic Team nod, becoming just the second Colonial ever to repeat on the A-10 All-Academic Team; Hall of Famer Elana Meyers ('07) was named to the squad three years in a row from 2005-07. The senior psychology major, who was named to both the All-Academic squad and the All-Conference First Team last season, boasts a 3.49 grade-point average and will graduate in May ranking fourth all-time at GW in wins (20) and strikeouts (279) and fifth in ERA (3.64). A native of Tempe, Arizona, Martin has been named to the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll three times and to GW's Athletics Academic Dean's List in all seven semesters.
