Jenna Cone Named Top-11 Finalist for NFCA Freshman of the Year

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - George Washington softball's Jenna Cone has been named a top-11 finalist for the 2017 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year award, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced on Thursday.

Cone had been named a top-25 finalist on April 20, and has made it to the next round. The final three candidates will be announced on May 24, and the 2017 NFCA Freshman of the Year will be revealed on May 30.

Cone posted a historic freshman season, earning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, First Team All-Conference, and All-Rookie distinction after leading the league with a program-record 18 home runs. Cone led GW and ranked second in the conference with a .395 average. The Trabuco Canyon, California, native also set GW single-season records for runs scored (47), RBI (59), extra-base hits (28), total bases (125), slugging percentage (.822), and on-base percentage (.500).

At the close of the regular season, Cone ranked ninth in the nation in total home runs, 11th in RBI and 19th in slugging percentage.

The third baseman helped GW set a program record with 28 victories in 2017 while starting all 52 games.
