GW Softball Makes Elana Meyers First Recruit
Aug. 8, 2002 WASHINGTON, DC - Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA/Lithia Springs) has signed a National Letter-of-Intent with The George Washington University, head softball coach Leslie King-Moore has announced. In so doing, Meyers becomes the first signee for GW softball which begins its inaugural season in 2002-03. The 5-foot-8 shortstop was a four-year starter for the Lithia Springs High School softball team and was a four-time All-County selection, and three-time team MVP. The 2000-01 North Georgia High School Player of the Year, she set the school's single-season record for base hits with 73 in 1999-00. She graduated at the top of her senior class with a 4.0 GPA and was the sports editor of her school newspaper. In addition to her softball prowess, Meyers also was a standout for the Lithia Springs basketball and soccer teams as well as a school-record setting sprinter and discus thrower for the track team. "The first player you sign to a Letter-of-Intent is special to any head coach," King-Moore said. "Elana is extra special for me-she is not only the first I have signed at GW, but my first-ever signee as a head coach! As far as GW is concerned, she is, and always will be, the very first player to sign a Letter-of-Intent to play softball at George Washington." "Elana is a very talented student-athlete," King-Moore added. "Any student who can compete so successfully in not only softball, but track, soccer and basketball and graduate number one in her class, is something special. She is a very focused, goal-minded young woman who will be a terrific role model and provide leadership to future GW softball players."
GW softball, which competes in the Atlantic 10 Conference, will play its home games at the Mount Vernon softball field, 2100 Foxhall Road, in northwest Washington.
