WASHINGTON - Before its competitive season gets underway, the George Washington softball team will host two fall tournaments and play in a third, involving teams from around the D.C. and Maryland region, in preparation for the 2012 spring campaign.

GW hosts Howard and Maryland on Sunday, Sept. 18 in its first round-robin tournament at Mount Vernon Softball Field. The Colonials take on the cross-town Bison at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Terrapins at 12:00 p.m.

On Sunday, Oct. 2, GW hosts its second round-robin event with Mount St. Mary's and UMBC. The Colonials face off with the Mount at 12:00 p.m., then take on the Retrievers at 4:00 p.m.

GW will also play in the Maryland Tournament in College Park, Md., the weekend of Oct. 8-9.The Buff and Blue match up with Towson on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 2:00 p.m. and Delaware State at 4:00 p.m. The Colonials wrap up fall ball on Sunday, Oct. 9 with games against Delaware State at 10:00 a.m., and host Maryland at 2:00 p.m.

GW finished the 2011 season with a 16-27-1 overall record under first-year head coach Stacey Schramm - a 10-win improvement from the 2010 season. The Colonials return 16 letterwinners to the lineup, including Atlantic 10 All-Rookie selection Chelsea Lenhart.
