Washington, DC - The George Washington University Softball team kicked off their 2006 Fall season with a 4-0 victory over Georgetown in the first game of the GW Fall Opener held at the Mount Vernon Softball Field Saturday morning. In the second game the Colonials were victorious once again, 5-1 over Hood College.
Sophomore Carrie Higdon led the offense for GW going 1-2 with a two run triple, an rbi groundout and a walk in the first game. She added a sacrifice fly in the second game scoring junior Teresa Thomas from third. Higdon also pitched three shutout innings allowing one hit to close out the win over Georgetown.
Thomas went 1-3 on the day with two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base in the second game.
Junior Caroline Howe also added three base-hits including a triple with one run scored in the two games.
Newcomers Amanda Gabriel, Lily Rogers and Amanda Holst all made their fall debuts for the Colonials participating in both games. Gabriel led the way for the Colonials pitching six shutout innings over the two games and allowing only three base-hits. Rogers added a double while playing defensively behind the plate and first base. Holst also added a run in her debut.
The Colonials will be back in action Sunday, October 8 at home in their second Fall series. GW will open the four game set with a 9:00 am start against Howard and also play in the finale at 3:00 pm versus Morgan State.
