Jacqueline Kay Throws No-Hitter in GW Sweep of Coppin State
Oct. 30, 2002 WASHINGTON, DC - Sophomore Jacqueline Kay (Los Angeles, CA/Loomis Chaffee School) helped end GW softball's exhibition season on a high note on Oct. 26 by tossing a no-hitter to beat Coppin State 8-0 at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. During the second game of the doulbleheader, Kay struck out seven batters while only walking two. Freshman Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA/Lithia Springs) had two hits and one RBI to lead the Colonials on offense. Kay's performance followed a first-game thriller that the Colonials won in the bottom of the tenth 2-1. The Colonials received outstanding pitching peformances from sophomore Jacyln Sanderson (Green Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills) and Meyers, who combined to keep Coppin State scoreless until the top of the ninth. Coppin State got one run, but the Colonials answered in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to the tenth. The Colonials held and senior Sammi Sordi (Boothwyn, PA/Chichester) snuck home after a wild pitch to give GW the victory.
The GW Softball team will open its inaugural season on Feb. 22 with a doubleheader against Norfolk State at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
