Softball Unveils 2018 Schedule
Colonials set for eight games vs. 2017 NCAA competition
WASHINGTON - George Washington softball announced its 2018 schedule Thursday, highlighted by eight games against teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament last spring.
GW opens the season Feb. 16 at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla., with a matchup against reigning MEAC champion Florida A&M. It's the first of five tournaments, including a pair at GW Softball Field, on a rigorous nonconference slate.
The regular season, which includes 23 games against Atlantic 10 competition, wraps up May 6 with a conference contest at Saint Louis.
"This schedule is very challenging and will provide our young squad a chance to compete at very high levels throughout the entire year," said Head Coach James DeFeo, who guided the Colonials to a program-record 28 wins in 2017. "We are traveling to Florida and California to open up our season and will have a chance to play tough Power 5 conference competition when we go to South Carolina. Our two home tournaments will also provide some NCAA-caliber competition, so we will be very prepared for our conference foes."
GW starts the season by playing five different opponents over three days at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic. Then, the Colonials are off to California from Feb. 23-25 for five games at the UC-Riverside Tournament, including two against 2017 Big Sky champion Montana.
The Buff and Blue's final road tournament of the spring is at South Carolina from March 2-4 with games against the host Gamecocks, Marshall and Liberty. All three clubs advanced to postseason play last spring.
On Feb. 28, GW kicks off its home schedule with a midweek doubleheader against local foe Howard. The Colonials will also host UMBC (March 14), Coppin State (March 27) and Georgetown (April 4) for nonconference midweek matchups later in the season. They'll travel to Hampton (April 25), as well.
GW finishes tuning up for A-10 play with two tournaments at GW Softball Field, part of a 22-game homestand that spans most of March. The Colonial Classic, from March 9-11, features three games apiece with 2017 Ivy League champ Princeton and Fairleigh Dickinson. The Colonials welcome Lafayette, Brown and Siena for the Buff and Blue Challenge, which runs March 16-18.
The A-10 schedule begins March 24 with a home doubleheader against St. Bonaventure. GW also hosts conference series against Massachusetts (March 30-31), La Salle (April 14-15) and Saint Joseph's (April 28-29). The Colonials will celebrate Senior Day on April 29 before a 1 p.m. first pitch.
The A-10 road slate includes trips to Rhode Island (April 7-8), George Mason (April 18), Dayton (April 21-22) and Saint Louis (May 5-6).
The 2018 A-10 Championship will be held May 9-12 at Fordham's Bahoshy Softball Complex in Bronx, N.Y. The top six teams in the league standings earn the chance to compete for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which begins with Regional play May 18.
