CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The George Washington women's squash squad opened play in the Kurtz Cup (B-Division) of the College Squash Association National Championships but fell to No. 13 Brown, 5-4, in a close battle on Friday evening at the Murr Center Squash Courts.

GW will face No. 16 Amherst, who lost by a score of 9-0 to No. 9 Drexel on Friday, in the consolation semifinals on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

The Colonials swept the top third of the ladder, with freshman Zoe Foo Yuk Han, sophomore Engy Elmandouh, and senior co-captain Abby Shonrock all earning victories.

Also victorious for GW was senior Ginger Sands, 11-4, 11-6, 4-11, 11-7, in the eighth slot on the ladder against Brown's Hannah Safford.

The Colonials played a number of tightly contested matches, falling in four sets at Nos. 4 and 6.
