No. 14 Women’s Squash Falls in Season Finale

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The George Washington women’s squash squad won two matches at the top of the ladder but ultimately fell, 7-2, to No. 13 Virginia in the 13/14 playoff of the Kurtz Cup (B-Division) on Sunday afternoon at Harvard’s Murr Center squash courts. The Colonials end the season ranked 14th in the nation.

Freshman Zoe Foo Yuk Han earned at sweep at the No. 1 position on the ladder, 11-3, 11-8, 11-6, while sophomore Engy Elmandouh won her match at No. 2 with a 11-8, 11-9, 13-15, 11-8 victory over UVA’s Emily Woodworth.

The Buff and Blue conceded a total of two, five-game matches at Nos. 4 and 6, and two, four-game matches at Nos. 3 and 8.

Senior co-captain Abby Shonrock concludes her collegiate career with 40 individual victories, which ranks fifth all-time at GW. Fellow-captain Mary Jo Mahfood finishes her career as a Colonial with 29 individual wins, ranking ninth in program history, while Ginger Sands ranks tied-for-14 with 21 victories.

The Colonials will take a week hiatus before hosting the CSA Individual Championships for the first time in program history. Teams will play at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts in the Lerner Health & Wellness Center as well as the Squash on Fire club, located just blocks away from campus. Competition is set to start on Thursday, March 2 and conclude on Sunday, March 4. Lineups will be announced in the next week.
